Message From the Foundation President
As Published in The Mighty Oak, the Newsletter of the Senior Center
The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Foundation recently obtained its 501 (c) 3 non-profit status. What does that mean? For the Foundation, it means we are an independent charity that works for the Committee on Aging to raise funds to support programs and activities at the Senior Center.
We hit 2010 in a full run beginning with the Celebrity Waiter – Senior Prom. This annual event
has been a tradition in the Santa Clarita Valley for many years and always has an interesting theme. Last year we were aliens and this year the community had an opportunity to relive their high school proms.
With support of several major contributors, such as Union Bank and Lockheed Federal Credit Union and many local businesses and community members, as well as the Student Body from all of the local high schools, we were able to raise a good sum. And we all had fun! You’ll notice our “King and Queen” photograph in this newsletter.
We also have two other fun events coming up soon. The 2nd annual Dancing With Our Stars
brings together many non-profits in Santa Clarita. Pairing a community member with a professional dancer, non-profits solicit votes for their dancers. Last year we were lucky to have Moe Hafizi, publisher of Santa Clarita Magazine and Elite. Moe earned us a first place trophy and top dollar. This year we have his son Alex who will be trying to fill some mighty big dance shoes. You are encouraged to vote for Alex through the Senior Center or on-line at www.scvscfoundation.org. If you’d like to attend this event that will be held on April 24, you can also purchase tickets on-line.
Our 2nd annual Golf Tournament will be held once-again at TPC in Valencia on June 7. Last year we kept our entry price down and sold-out the tournament – one of the few charities in town able to do so. This year we are striving for the same results.
I would also like to mention that our Fund Development Director Kathy Crone set up office in the
Senior Center right behind Trips and Tours. She is instrumental to our organization and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the Foundation. Just drop in and say hi to her. She loves talking about the Senior Center and all those who use the services provided.
Lastly, we have decided to form an exploratory committee to look into the feasibility of building
a new center. The Newhall Center is a county facility and in need of much repair and upgrades. As president of the Foundation, I think it’s time the community gets behind our seniors and provide them the best and safest place to call their second home. I will bring you more as we begin to gather information. We will be asking for your input, as well, as we move along in this process.
These economic times have made it a challenge to raise funds, but our board is committed to
doing the best we can to keep the Senior Center alive and healthy. We are encouraged by the support we receive from the COA and all the seniors. Thank you.
